   Closing this in favor of a fresh start: 
https://github.com/apache/lucene/pull/16357. This branch got stale and the 
collector API moved underneath it, and I realized the idea needs more 
measurement than I first thought. Given that, the new attempt lives in the 
sandbox instead, and I'd welcome any help or guidance.
   
   I'll work on hosting my test data somewhere public (it's about 1TB) so 
others can reproduce what I'm seeing.
   
   Results so far are going the right direction.  It shows improvement with 
lookups/latency on a single JVM, and the new code is opt-in + far less 
invasive. Recall held within 0.006 of stock in everything we've measured.
