Thanks for the feedback, @gsmiller ! I've opened #16496 with the `partitionByLeaf` redesign and the new `partitionByLeafWithOrdinals` variant. It's scoped to just the ReaderUtil API + tests. We will follow up the doc-values retriever that motivates the ordinals in a separate PR. Would appreciate a review when you have a chance.
