About the second: `MinShouldMatchSumScorer` exposes an exact iterator, so it must find a 15-of-16 match before nextDoc() returns. With `HighLow`, frequency skew creates many rejected candidates and tail advances. This work happens before `TopFieldCollector` can apply its competitive iterator, so it may validate documents that sorting subsequently skips.
