@javanna I am going over #16741 as we speak. To your question, the intention is not to maintain unsupported codecs to provide on the class path and use via SPI, but to upgrade the index in a way that it never falls beyond the MIN_SUPPORTED_MAJOR watermark. Solr (9.11) just released a Core Admin UPGRADEINDEX API (which I authored) which does this. The idea is that if say in Lucene 12 it is decided to raise MIN_SUPPORTED_MAJOR to 11, then for an index created on Lucene 9.x, while you are still on Lucene 11, the index should be first upgraded to Lucene 11 so that it can continue to open on Lucene 12 later without breaking any MIN_SUPPORTED_MAJOR guarantees AND without having to recreate the index from source. For that to happen, the change in this PR is crucial since the readability of an index _really_ depends on the version of each individual segment rather than the created version which was originally _recorded_ in the SegmentInfos. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
