I did run into the same issue, and checked the DNS which did lead me to
sonatype who posted this on twitter:
"Sonatype Ops @sonatype_ops
A DNS error directed traffic from http://repo1.maven.org to
http://repo.maven.apache.org ; unless your DNS resolver flushes cache, SSL
validation errors may be experienced until 2350 UTC. Follow
https://issues.sonatype.org/browse/MVNCENTRAL-2870 … for updates."
