Building on the tip by [~cstamas] I was able to work around this issue without
POM modifications by adding to the {{<profiles>}} section of my
{{~/.m2/settings.xml}}:

(Note that this assumes that the project did not already have an important
{{argLine}} defined.)
I would also be eager to see an emergency 2.x fix.
