   +1, unable to run with 2.5.3 even with release:prepare.
   Command I'm using is

   `mvn release:clean release:prepare release:perform -Prelease
   `
   Pom has a very basic profile to state the plugin
   ```
                <profile>
                        <id>release</id>
                        <activation>
                                <activeByDefault>false</activeByDefault>
                        </activation>
                        <build>
                                <plugins>
                                        <plugin>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-release-plugin</artifactId>
                                                <version>2.5.3</version>
                                                <configuration>
<tagNameFormat>v@{project.version}</tagNameFormat>
                                                </configuration>
                                        </plugin>
                                </plugins>
                        </build>
                </profile>
   ```

   Building on Jenkins, I get
   ```
   [ERROR] Failed to execute goal
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-release-plugin:2.5.3:prepare (default-cli) on
project lib3cp-java: Cannot prepare the release because you have local
modifications :
