Just a quick idea which came to my mind:
Before the checkstyle dependency is updated, maybe rewrite this document:
https://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-checkstyle-plugin/examples/upgrading-checkstyle.html
Instead of writing "you CAN upgrade the checkstyle version" maybe even write
"you SHOULD choose a checkstyle version explicitly"?
