That's how one of the [most utilized
highlighter|https://highlightjs.org/usage/] works.
[Prim.js|https://prismjs.com/] on the other hand insists on having a {{<code
class="language-java">}} element.
Anyway, most highlighters prefer the below syntax:
{code:html}
<pre><code class="language-css">p { color: red }</code></pre>
{code}
The class indicating the language can however be set on an ancestor, so the
below will work as well, for example:
{code:html}
<div class="language-css"><pre><code>p { color: red }</code></pre></div>
{code}
I'm concerned that FlexMark doesn't produce the {{<code>}} element, though...
