Maarten Mulders commented on MNGSITE-439:
-----------------------------------------
Of course, we could be puristic and say "if it's not distributed by us, we
don't support it", and we could even pretend it doesn't exist. But it does
exist, and we know it. I feel that's not helpful to new Maven users who want to
get started. Alternatively, we could help them out, point them at the available
options while managing their expectations a bit.
I think having such a list makes it easier for end-users to install Maven,
which would be a good thing in itself. I don't think the list has to be
endless, as long as we take care to limit ourselves to popular platforms -
Windows, a few Linux distributions and macOS, to name a few.
If we decide to include such a list, we could add some kind of disclaimer. It
would explain that those distributions are not supported by the Apache Maven
team. It might also explain that before submitting an issue, users should
verify the issue occurs with our "official" distribution as well.
