@michael-o just my 5 cents: "long running PRs" (this one is slowly 1/2 year old :smile: ) suffer from very same issues as "long running feature branches": is easy to become stale, forgotten, fall into oblivion... I don't think we need to "fix" last straw on every line of code here, in this PR (comments are becoming unmanageable huge and long threads). You already did tremendous work on improving original PR (you pointed out places for simplifying, tidy up and removing "non logical" bits), so IMO let's merge this and then we can continue "step by step" (or "baby steps" as one would say) improving overall code base.
