I think I was able to prove my point. Please see attached log.

Using alpha-2, the dependency JARs are downloaded and stored in the local repo 
with 

{{- r w - r - - r - -}}

 

Using alpha-3, the dependency JARs are downloaded and stored in the local repo 
with 

{{- r w - - - - - - -}}
