Elliotte Rusty Harold resolved MDEP-678.
----------------------------------------
Resolution: Not A Problem
On further thought, the goals now say "Goal that retrieves a list of artifacts
from the repository and unpacks them in a defined location." which is both
what's accurate and desired. That is, if it's a format that's put in the
repository then we'll unpack it. This isn't a general purpose unarchiver
utility. It's only used to unpack artifacts found in the repository, and the
end user should neither know nor care what formats are used there.
> Clarify which archive formats are supported for goals "unpack" and
> "unpackDependencies"

> The site at https://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-dependency-plugin
> currently doesn't state which archive formats are supported for goals
> "unpack" and "unpackDependencies". IIUC it should be all the formats listed
> in https://codehaus-plexus.github.io/plexus-archiver/. Would be good to add
> that link.
