When using the maven-toolchains-plugin auto discovery mechanism all plugins aware toolchains will use selected JDK. Also surefire will use the same when additional configuration for surefire will be not provided. So why do you want use discovery mechanism from toolchains plugin and additionally provide special configuration for surefire?
