gnodet opened a new pull request, #13489:
URL: https://github.com/apache/maven/pull/13489

   Reverts #11502.

   The two new tests
(`testResolveParentThrowsUnresolvableModelExceptionWhenUsingWrongRangeFormat`
and
`testResolveDependencyThrowsUnresolvableModelExceptionWhenUsingWrongRangeFormat`)
use `[1:2)` as the invalid version range. This string contains `:`, which
causes `MavenValidator.validateArtifact` to throw `IllegalArgumentException`
(via `PathUtils.validateArtifactComponents`) *before* the resolver even
attempts range resolution. That exception is not caught by the `catch
(VersionRangeResolutionException)` block in `ProjectModelResolver`, so it
escapes as an uncaught `IllegalArgumentException` instead of the expected
`UnresolvableModelException`, causing the tests to fail.

This is currently breaking CI on `master` and on all open PRs.
