`mvnd-client` was a multi-release jar whose base `DefaultClient` ran Maven in-process (`MavenCling`) on JDKs older than the client's release. On master both halves compile for Java 17, so a JDK below 17 cannot load the jar and 17+ always picks `META-INF/versions/17`: the fallback never runs. It was also the only user of `maven-embedder`, so the client now depends on `maven-api-core` alone (for `Constants`), and its runtime classpath drops from 68 to 24 jars. The distribution is unaffected: provisio copies `mvnd-client` with `*:*` exclusions, and the JVM client loads Maven from `mvn/lib`. `mvnd-1.x` still compiles the base for Java 8, so its fallback stays. Verified: the native image built from master and from this branch with the same GraalVM is identical (5,380 types / 25,610 methods reachable, 26.53 MiB); the JVM client (`MVND_CLIENT=jvm bin/mvnd.sh`) and the native client both build a sample project from the assembled distribution. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
