Closing following @elharo's review: the distinction between `<tag/>` and `<tag></tag>` is not guaranteed by the XML specification (XML 1.0 §3.1 treats them as semantically identical), and the heuristic used internally by `DefaultXmlService` to produce `null` vs `""` in `XmlNode.value()` is not preserved reliably after POM merges or cross-parser roundtrips. A proper fix requires an unambiguous XML mechanism.
