Dug into this since the attached reproducer uses `maven-release-plugin:3.3.1`, which predates the 3.4 switch from the JDOM2-based POM rewriter to `domtrip-core` (lossless XML round-tripping). Built current `master` (3.3.2-SNAPSHOT) and ran a real `mvn release:prepare -B` with your exact second reproducer (`scmReleaseCommitComment noSuchFlag="Some thing">Some thing</scmReleaseCommitComment>`) against a real git repo. The committed POM has that line byte-for-byte unchanged — all 4 spaces preserved in both the attribute and the text content — only the `<version>` line is touched. Also checked `domtrip-core` 1.8.0 directly in isolation: it does not collapse whitespace runs in attribute values. Looks fixed on master since the domtrip migration; not present in any 3.3.x release yet. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
