---------------------------------------------------------------
for input files, there is a
[proposal|http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAVENUSER/POM+Element+for+Source+File+Encoding]
that has been implemented in MSITE-314: default input encoding is still
ISO-8859-1(unlike other plugins that default to platform encoding, see
MSITE-326), but it is easily configurable in one central property.
for output files, there is a [new
proposal|http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAVEN/Reporting+Encoding+Configuration]
with corresponding MSITE-340 issue

> Environment: Gentoo Linux, UTF-8 encoded pom files

> UTF-8 is already widely supported and used by tools, there is hardly a reason
> to keep with ISO-8859-1 found through the code.
> In my usecases, it typically makes troubles with developer names containing
> accented letters.
> Attached patch changes the default input and output encoding in
> maven-site-plugin which is the most important piece.
