Note that version 2.0 also allowed HTML markup which was not in a CDATA section.
This has also been used, e.g. to add links and emphasis, both of which would
also be useful in PDF output.

As to announcements, these are processed using a Velocity template.
Velocity is powerful enough to be able to handle markup so surely it ought to
be possible to fix this somehow?
