I constantly find myself creating families of several descriptors that differ
only in 'formats'. I claim that it makes sense to treat formats as not part of
the spec of the assembly, but rather of how the spec is applied.
If no one objects, I'll write the code so that the configuration can contain
formats that override the descriptor.
