Thanks [~bmahler], I checked out the metric classes and I see what you mean; we
ask for a window to initialize the metric, and default to {{None()}} if it
isn't provided, leading to a metric with no history. As long as we're happy
with that default behavior, this environment variable would seem to be
unnecessary now; at the very least I can submit a patch to clean up its
remnants.
