Review comment:
       we could also employ the initializer form of the if-statement
   
   ```
   if (auto split_position = find_last_pattern.getLastPatternPosition()) {
     ...
   }
   ```
   unfortunately we would have to use it as `*split_position`, not sure which 
one would be "better" overall
