Thanks for the feedback @mbegerau - I have rebased against main and addressed your comments. I'm not sure I like the idea of trying a commit with an empty body to check if the error code is correct in order to assume write permissions. So for now, I just assumed that if we have read access (using the list branch endpoint), we assume write access.
