Thanks for filing this issue [~danw4].

Following on from the discussion in Slack, on option to improve this behavior 
could be to have the Python process shutdown if it is unable to communicate 
with the parent NiFi process after a certain amount of time. I plan to take a 
closer look at possible solutions soon.
