Thanks, @chedim for the response. I modified the trust store initialization in my previous commit as you described, and this further confirms that the solution should now be good. Regarding the mTLS part, the KeyManagerFactoryWrapper seems to be a good solution for our current use case and is much simpler than creating a custom implementation. Thanks for the tip.
