Review Comment:
   While returning a boolean looks reasonable on the first glance it 
complicates reporting the exception that prevented connection — which should 
not only be logged but also incorporated to the user-visible result. As there 
are two contexts this method is being called from — more parameters would need 
to be added which would make the then-a-function implementation more complex 
and bound to context
