Why do we need "in" for appending?
To avoid duplication can it be done like:
```
auto flags = std::fstream::out | std::fstream::binary;
if (append) {
flags |= std::fstream::in | std::fstream::app
}
file_stream_->open(path.c_str(), flags);
```
