We did some more testing and I think we found the real cause (NOT related to Novell Client or OS version). Our Novell client, during start-up script, was setting a system wide variable called "DATA". We changed now its name to something different (GGMMAA) ... et voilà ... problems disappeared. I think that in Libreoffice 3.5.3 or later there is no use/check of this variable, while in Apache OpenOffice it is still "used" somehow.
