Could to try one quick test more? What if you do all the copy & paste and formatting, but then save to an ODT file (or DOC if that is what you were using). Then exit OpenOffice, restart it, load the document and export to PDF. That will tell us whether the issue is in the PDF export, or whether the earlier steps are the problem.
