Bug ID: 121779
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Writer Locks When Copy/Pasting Text Within Writer
Classification: Application
Product: word processor
Version: AOO 3.4.1
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows XP
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: editing
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]

This bug has happened to me quite frequently of late, though I can't recall it
ever happening in the past, so would seem to be a fairly recently introduced
bug.
Steps each time involve:
1) Write a lengthy section of text (preferably one that includes quote marks,
m-dashes and some use of italics as well). Save the document.
2) Select a section of the text and CTRL-C (note - I often hit CTRL-C twice in
succession, a habit developed in the past when I had a PC with a flaky keyboard
that didn't always copy to clipboard on the first attempt).
3) Either open a new writer document, or scroll to the end of the current one.
4) Attempt to CTRL-V to paste the text. On intermittent attempts the text does
not paste, and Writer ceases responding (I've been trying to pay attention and
see if there's any other step that I always do before such failures, such as
saving the document just before copying, or running a word-count on the
selection before copying; so far there doesn't seem to be any correlation).
5) Writer cannot be closed and must be shut down using the Windows Task
Manager. After reloading it works perfectly fine and a copy/paste can be done
without problems.
Usually on re-opening the software the recovery dialogue comes up (though it
did not come up the one time this bug occurred when I was attempting to paste a
section of text to the end of the same document I was copying from). The
post-recovery documents do not include any pasted text (ie, if you opened a
blank new window to paste to, it recovers as a still-blank window).
Also interesting to note and likely part of the bug is that if I, after such a
crash, attempt pasting the text still in clip board to either the
newly-reopened Writer or another program, such as a Tumblr editing window,
special characters such as the quote marks and m-dash are showing as foreign
language symbols instead. Any formatting such as italics is gone. Normally
these symbols and formatting transfer perfectly.
Example: He had to stop for a moment, cursing mentally over how hard this was
to say. モThat I cared for. Fenris ヨ never doubt that you are one of them. You
mean very much to me.ヤ
Correct Version: He had to stop for a moment, cursing mentally over how hard
this was to say. “That I cared for. Fenris – never doubt that you are one of
them. You mean very much to me.”
Note: other software open at the time this occurs usually includes a Skype
window and Chrome.
