David,

Careful, there are some .docx files created with OpenOffice [OO] which Word cannot open at all. I had saved a new and important OO file in .docx format, I deleted OO and Word could not read the .docx file at all. When you have both word processors, they cooperate best with .odt files which both can read and write. I did not know that, but re-installed OO to open the .docx, saved it as .odt, then I could open the file in Word, and breathed a sigh of relief. If you use any unusual page-sizes - my problem is with half-letter pages [5.5" x 8.5"] - be sure to print from Word.

I downloaded and installed the latest version of OpenOffice, primarily to use Draw. I opened a Word document and saw that the default was the OpenOffice word processor instead of MS-Word. So I uninstalled OpenOffice using the Control Panel thinking that I would see if I could just install Draw. Then I noticed that all the .docx icons had changed (but not the .doc icons - see attached .gif). I started to panic when I tried to open a .docx and I got a popup asking for my registration key. Naturally, I can't find my registration disks. Curiously, there is no problem with the other MS-Office documents (.xlsx, .accdb). Also I discovered a workaround: if I click on the MS-Word icon I can then open a docx from inside MS-Word. Are you aware of this issue and is there any way around it?
