Make a small 4-column Calc spreadsheet, e.g.

Select A1:D2
Insert > Chart
Click XY
Click Finish
[Symbols for column D are yellow.]
File > Save as whatever.xls
File > Close
File > Recent Documents > whatever.xls
[Symbols for Column D are white and essentially invisible.]
Bug seen in Windows 7 Starter and Windows XP Home, both running OOO330m2
