Step (7) changes the object to hatching and it gets the default hatching which is set for the document at this time. The default hatching is changed by setting a hatching when *no* object is selected; choosing a hatching when an object is selected does not change the default for newly created objects. Same explanation for step (8). To change the default for newly created objects. set something when no object is selected. This needs to be done using the dialog, the panel is not visible/available in this case.
