1. From AOO Start Center open new Writer Document
2. Menu 'Tools -> Options -> Writer -> Formatting Aids'

4. additional clicks on links for OpenOffice Writer -> Formatting Aids
Text under Display of is wrong, not all listed items are "Non-printing
Characters" and have to do with that function. For details see "Bug 122369 -
