Maybe this is annoying enough to someone that they have an incentive to adopt the PDF Import extension and update it and improve it. If it is truly essential to so many people maybe it has commercial potential. I'm optimistic enough to believe that all truly essential things get done. Another option, perhaps worth trying, is to see if Oracle would contribute the extension to Apache under SGA.
