BTW. µ is on the keyboard with AltGr-M. Method 2 works always. If you use the Insert-Special-Character dialog you will see left-top a drop-down list for the font and right-top a drop-down list for the supported subsets. And one of these subsets is "Dingbats" (if the font supports it).
