For me this feature works in Calc and it should nothing be removed. Type a text into the cell, were you put a non-breaking space between e.g. number and unit, for example "This texts has 3 cm column width." Set the cell to automatically wrap. Change the column width so that "3" would be on one line and "cm" on the next line. Notice, that the whole part "3 cm" is moved to the next line. Repeat the same with an ordinary space between "3" and "cm".
