this isn't an ordinary png:
size: 11220 x 7664  Pixels (85.99 MPixels) (1.46)
colors: 2   (1 BitsPerPixel)
Disk size: 103.64 KB (106.129 Bytes)
Memory size: 10.26  MB (10.760.304 Bytes) <- IrfanView
Memory size: 723,7 MB <- Gimp

I guess the memory size in AOO is somewhere in between
default graphic cache is 20 MB and 5.2 MB per Object

WORKAROUND:
* raise the memory for graphics
  Tools - Options.. - OpenOffice - Memory
  100 MB cache and 52 MB per Object worked for me
  (not sure if both changed are needed)
 -> file loads and shows fine, a bit slow though
