What did you mean by 'Then zoom slider disappears'?
When I change the to the maximum zoom using the zoom slider (3000% zoom
factor), the zoom slider is still visible and working. I can change the zoom to
any value using the zoom slider. A double-click on the shown zoom factor opens
the 'Zoom & Layout View' dialog in which I can choose whatever zoom I want.
Having the Zoom toolbar visible (Menu View - Toolbars - Zoom) also allows me to
change the zoom.

Thus, for me it is possible to return to the starting zoom factor. This is not
an issue for me. I second Regina's suggestion, especially because the Zoom
toolbar offers this the requested function already.
