If I compare this to java regexp engine - the endless loops on finite text would not happened there. There sre a lot regexp expression testers online and you can try this regexp expression - you would never get endless loop there. For me it means ICU engine has a bug - is there a chance of taking different engine? Php, Pearl, Java - everywhere this expression works without ending in endless loop - only in OpenOffice or ICU - user gets stucked!?
