Strangely I cannot find LO download stats anywhere.
And talking about "upstream",

the direction clearly flows from OpenOffice down to LO

Back to the technical side of things, compatibility is here an invalid
argument; for example, go-oo for years the --convert switch, inherited to LO,
which isn't present in OpenOffice, making them already incompatible before the
double-dash change.
