I did send the document on this machine to another running the 4.0.1 version and it opens and closes ok there---and you can make entries and modify it and close it there normally too. ergo--it must be the new version installed on the machine I was working with when the problem began. As to what was happening precisely when the freezes began--I am pretty sure it was while formatting the background in a single cell from light red to light green or vice versa right after making a dollar entry in another cell--that particular entry had updated the other cell values so at least that part of the posting went well.
