As a result, I have fixed the problem and it was not due to Open Office Writer. It never occurred to me that the problem was with Microsoft Word, although the clue is in the product title. It seems that the root cause of the problem was that I had saved the original document as an RTF and it looks like it was that which ignored the hyphen. When I opened the DOC version and retyped the link in the document, the hyphen in the URL appeared as if by magic and I deleted the original URL reference.
