Adding to the list of affected punctuations/symbols -
* exclamation mark, usage example, factorial
* comma, usage example, coordinates

Right now, as a workaround, for something as simple as
(x, 3!)
I have to write
(x"," 3"!")

That's really ugly!

I'm not sure introducing "a user selectable punctuation font" is a good idea. 
I think OO Math internal has to be redone/reprogrammed to understand what
"variables" are.  Actually, in OO Math, we can open menu Format > Fonts... 

A dialog will pop up showing that *only* variables are in italics.  But
punctuations and non-letter symbols SHOULD be be considered as variables.

PS: Wow, it's incredible to see that this bug has been filed on 2003 but never
corrected.
