I updated JRE (and confirmed that Tools->Options->Open Office->Java knew it) to no avail. Installing 4.1.1 fixed it. Apparently the old JRE, which had been installed later than 3.x.x, was too new--not defective. "Unexpected or defective" would be a fairer, more informative description.
