The reason I ask is that not ALL actions in AOO are supported in the ".doc" format. Typically you get a warning that some styling might be lost, etc. if you try to save in any of the MS Office formats. In summary, images in footnotes might not be something that is even currently supported in the ".doc" format (and of course, this depends on the actual version of that.) I would at least try adding the images to footnotes using some other product that claims to be 100% compatible with (some version of) MS Office and see what happens.
