I was able to log the last successful update check I did to earlier in 2018. At the time, I already had Openoffice 4.1.5 as I remembered. My suspicion is that the problem is due to changes in Java. In order to fix the problem, you have to have a particular version of Java installed in order to run Openoffice properly. Java has been mentioned as associated with Openoffice. What I have been after to confirm this is an updated version of the jxpinstall.exe Java installation program, which is what I used to download to install Java.
