Juxtaposing two commands
SUMMARY: command "Object Catalog" on Standard toolbar deserves
its own icon not a one widely used in context of graphic
operations.
In Basic IDE on Standard toolbar you see a command "Object Catalog".
Icon assigned to it looks exactly like icon employed across
AOO Components in toolbars, Navigator and item in submenu Insert
(Insert > Picture > From File).
(see attached screenshots: "Comparison" and "FromFile icon")
Tips for both commands (Change Icon dialog):
- Object Catalog: ".uno:ObjectCatalog"
- From File: ".uno:InsertGraphic"
Now juxtapose "From File" label with "Show Shapes", "Graphics",
"Draw Objects", "Drawing Objects", "Shape". Judging by names
and context they all refer to graphic operations. And have nothing
in common with choosing object in Basic IDE (be it subroutine,
function or dialog).
(By the way: placing icon "From File" next to
Insert > Picture > From File was a poor decision).
IMHO you shall design an icon specific for choosing subroutine/function/dialog.
One may argue that such request sounds
like "nitpicking", for:
- command Object Catalog has a tooltip that clearly explains
what this command does i.e. "Object Catalog" or
"Opens the Object dialog, where you can view the Basic objects."
(if "Extended tooltips" option is ON);
- AOO Help provides exhaustive description of Object Catalog;
- if icon in question seems - for any reason - inadequate - one can
always change it in Change Icon dialog (other icon from the list
or new one imported)
- "practice makes perfect" holds true even for a Basic macro programmer.
But that is not the point! And as a last resort I dare to direct you to famous
dialogue between Alice and Humpty Dumpty (Chapter 6. in
"Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone,
'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'
'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many
different things.'
'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
So please give Object Catalog command an icon it trully deserves.
An image that conveys due meaning in context of macro edition.
(a good starting point is icon you see in Objects dialog).
