Issue ID: 128355
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Document splits, hald disappears, then crashes
Product: Writer
Version: 4.1.7
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows 10
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 (lowest)
Component: editing
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
This issue has happened more than once. I am writing several books using Open
Office, one in particular is up to 340 pages. On this, and sometimes others is
a weird condition that I can't figure out, and a search of prior reported bugs
shows nothing similar.
At random points, the document will be "split" as if the left margin had been
moved to, say, the 66th character or 5 inches. The entire left half of the
document disappeared as if somehow I had selected a special "mark left half"
option (Word Perfect refers to the feature as "Select Columns") then cut it.
The left portion of the document has now disappeared. As I can't edit the
document, and to prevent possible damage in case it actually has lost par of my
work, I usually quit without saving.
This time I decided to investigate in order to do a subsequent bug report,
which, turns out to be this missive. Very shortly thereafter, Open Office
Writer informs me with a message box which generally informs me the next time I
run the program, Open Office Writer will perform forensic recovery, and the
program then decides to accept the consignment to oblivion. Restarting Writer
apparently does succeed in recovering it (the message says so). But of course,
I could not be certain without inspecting the entire document and comparing it
to the previous version. As far as I can tell there is no data corruption, or
loss, other than possibly losing all changes made since the last save.
As a several decade long computer programmer, I'd like to be more specific as
to what I was doing at the time these failures happen, but to put it bluntly,
I'll be damned if I can figure out if it's related to something I did. (Well,
technically, it's always related to something I did, after all, if I hadn't
started the program it never would have crashed in the first place!)
I don't think I was doing anything more unusual than moving around and adding
or deleting characters. Maybe if I stopped doing that, the problem would too.
Of course, this would make it difficult to get anything accomplished.
I guess when editing more than one document at the same time, only a single
process is used, because when one window crashes, all open Open Office windows
go with it, vanishing into never-never land.
Having the program act in such a "rude and uncivilized manner" is both
unsettling and worrisome, as well as annoying, especially if one is in a
sustained productive mode ("in the zone") and this misbehavior disrupts my
workflow.
I switched from Word Perfect to Open Office more than five years ago because WP
allowed me to create and save a 780+ page book which, on subsequent attempts to
reload that document, did not crash the program so much as lock it up, never to
respond again. Please don't force me to have to go back to Word Perfect
(although sometimes some of the ways it did things are easier or more
intuitive.)
